VIC: Centenary of Sidney Myer s arrival in Australia celebrated
One hundred years after SIDNEY MYER arrived in Australia as a penniless Russian migrant,
his ancestors have honoured his achievements in the central Victorian city where he planted
the seeds of his retail empire.
More than 40 family members spanning three generations today joined Bendigo Mayor DARYL
MCCLURE and the mayor of SIDNEY MYER'S Russian home town, KRITCHEV, outside the Myer Bendigo
store to commemorate his achievements.
Kritchev mayor ALEXANDER NIKOLAEVICH SIVAEV helped Myer family members plant a tree in the
city's Rosalind Park as part of the centenary celebrations.
A plaque recognising SIDNEY MYER'S achievements was also unveiled.
SIDNEY MYER, born SIMCHA BAEVSKI and the youngest of 11 children, arrived at Melbourne's
Station Pier in 1899.
With brother ELCON, he established the first Myer store in Bendigo in 1900.
Some 11 years later, he bought out an established Melbourne drapery business and
transformed the local retail scene after studying merchandising methods and setting up
contacts overseas.
He died 65 years ago at the age of 56.
