Fed: Authorities trying to confirm 2nd al-Qaeda Aussie captured

CANBERRA, Dec 17 AAP - Australian al-Qaeda fighter David Hicks has been formally handed
over to the United States as authorities try to confirm reports a second Aussie has been
captured in Afghanistan.

Attorney-General Daryl Williams said Northern Alliance troops had handed Hicks, 26,
over to US forces and he was transferred to a US ship early this morning, Australian time.

"The Australian government has formally sought permission from US authorities for a
joint Australian Federal Police and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation investigation
team to interview Mr Hicks," he said in a statement.
