N.E.T.: New Korean carrier selects N.E.T. multiservice network for managed network services

M2 PRESSWIRE-22 June 1998-N.E.T.: New Korean carrier selects N.E.T. multiservice network for managed network services (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

RDATE:220698

Emerging carriers require highly efficient networking equipment that allows them to offer competitive managed services. Hanwha Corporation is establishing a new carrier subsidiary and launching new managed services serving domestic, international and internet clients in Korea. Hanwha is establishing its new international network using N.E.T. Promina 800 Multiservice Access Platforms equipped with toll-quality voice compression capabilities. The contract is valued at $2.5 million and the new network is expected to be operational by the end of April. Initially, Hanwha is targeting the voice resale market for international traffic and managed services for domestic customers.

"Our goal is to create the leading alternative carrier in Korea for a variety of managed services, and we are confident that the network model featuring multiservice convergence gives us the best advantage," said Cheoung-Nam Lee, Ph.D., managing director, Hanwha Corporation. "After an extensive study of the competitive equipment offerings and the backbone network topologies being used by other regional alternative carriers, we concluded that we have the best growth path and connectivity options with the Promina line."

In the recently deregulated Korean telecommunications market, Hanwha plans to work with other carriers that are seeking bulk transport of telecommunications traffic in and out of Korea. Hanwha will be targeting voice and facsimilie traffic with its initial offering. Hanwha is establishing a Promina network with nodes located in Korea targeting businesses in Seoul, and the U.S. The Promina Multiservice Access Platform offered a high-density applications capability that requires a very small footprint in terms of space requirements. The Promina line also offers established internal feature modules to offer ATM and frame relay services without additional inefficient external systems. This is particularly important for new network installations in high-cost urban areas.

Hanwha is also implementing N.E.T. PanaVue network management system (NMS) to manage the network and automatically correlate information related to traffic on the network. Hanwha will be able to use internet-based web technology as the interface to easily access information related to the network. The SNMP-based PanaVue NMS is an HP OpenView application that simplifies network management by integrating multiple network elements in a single system.

"The competitive carrier marketplace is moving at a fast rate and we are pleased to add Hanwha to our list of network service providers participating in the international resale niche," said Ed Peverell, senior vice president, sales and support, N.E.T. "The trend in the marketplace is to interconnect long-haul capabilities and resell capacity at highly competitive rates -- an application that the Promina Series is particularly well-suited for and that N.E.T. has a great deal of experience with."

The Promina Series platforms can be configured for high capacity switching situations requiring multiple T1/E1 and T3/E3 trunks. They also feature the optional N.E.T. PrimeVoice Plus module which offers toll-quality voice compression at 8kbit/s, which results in up to 8x the call capacity of a conventional digital circuit. As a result, one E1 trunk can support up to 240 simultaneous calls. The module also supports fax and voiceband data, and tone-relay for major signaling types used in phonemail, personal identification number password access and other communications applications.

Hanwha Corporation's telecommunication division is one of the priority businesses of the company along with chemicals/pharmaceuticals, trade and construction. In January, 1994, all software related departments within the Hanwha Group were integrated into the computer & telecommunication business division. These steps allowed Hanwha Corporation to prepare itself for future busineses which include developing information systems and providing wire/wireless communication devices and telecommunication services.
